Prelims Paper Pattern – 135 minutes, 150 questions, no sectional cut-off
The first screen is objective only and carries 600 marks; each right answer gives you four marks and one wrong takes away one mark. You face 50 General Studies, 35 General Science & Maths and 65 Reasoning questions. English is not tested here, so Hindi-medium students relax. OMR sheets are evaluated by BSSC after the final answer key on 20 March 2025 and only 12-13 times the vacancies will be called for Mains. Roughly 3.8 lakh appeared last year, so target at least 320 net marks to stay safe.
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Negative per Q |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Studies | 50 | 200 | -1 |
| Science & Maths | 35 | 140 | -1 |
| Mental Ability | 65 | 260 | -1 |
| Total | 150 | 600 | — |
Mains Paper Pattern – Two descriptive papers, 400 marks each
Those who clear Prelims will write Paper-1 Hindi (100 marks) and Paper-2 General Studies (300 marks) on the same day in June 2025. Hindi has essay, grammar and précis while GS has short notes, data interpretation and Bihar-specific socio-economic questions. Duration is three hours each and you must score 30 % in Hindi and 35 % in GS to remain in the merit. Final selection is made on the sum of Prelims + Mains; therefore Mains can pull you up even if you were on the edge after Prelims.
General Studies Syllabus – History, Polity, Geography, Economy & Current Events
Ancient & Medieval India is limited to NCERT themes like Mauryan administration, Pal dynasty and Bhakti movement. Modern History focuses on 1857 revolt, Champaran Satyagraha and Quit India from Bihar lens.
Polity covers President to Panchayati Raj with special weight on 73rd-74th amendments. Geography asks river systems, soil types and census 2011 data of Bihar. Economy sticks to state budget terms, GST share and central schemes such as PM-KISAN. Current events mean the last twelve months, so make a monthly one-page note.
Science & Maths Syllabus – Physics, Chemistry, Biology up to class 10 level
Physics questions come from motion, light, electricity and everyday applications like fuse wire. Chemistry is mostly acids-bases, metals-non-metals and carbon compounds. Biology loves human body systems, plant nutrition and public health programmes like pulse-polio.
Maths is 25 % of this section; expect ratio, percentage, profit-loss, simple interest, time-work and bar graphs. No calculus or trigonometry appears, so practising Bihar board 10th textbook examples is enough for 30-plus raw marks.
Mental Ability & Reasoning – Analogy, series, coding, direction, syllogism
Verbal part checks 15-20 word analogy and classification pairs. Non-verbal has picture series, dice and paper folding. Numerical side gives number series, arithmetic reasoning and data sufficiency.
Logical bit inserts statement-assumption, syllogism and Venn diagrams. Speed is key—solve the easiest 45 questions inside 35 minutes and mark the rest for review. Daily 20-minute practice from any standard Reasoning capsule keeps your accuracy above 85 % with minus marking in mind.
Hindi Language for Mains – Essay, Grammar, Translation & Precis Writing
Essay options usually rotate around digital Bihar, women empowerment, climate change and crop insurance. Keep word limit 250-300 and add 3-4 relevant data points. Grammar covers synonym-antonym, one-word substitution, error spotting and idioms from Bihar Hindi Granth Academy list.
Translation gives five English sentences to convert into clean Hindi. Precis passage is 150 words; shrink it to 50 words and provide a suitable title. Finish the entire paper in 2 h 15 m, reserve last 45 min for essay.
